The director brought back an audience into theaters and created something that will resonate with generations for decades to come. She is just as much humble as she is eager, expressing “I just want to be thought of as, like, she’s good. She can do it.” Despite being better than good, Gerwig discloses, as she has in the past, that she refrains from reading a single review until long after because it is just too painful in that moment. Although Barbie is a large talking point in the interview, the shoot exudes quite the contrast to the movie’s essence. The shoot casts a blue-tinted hue and a bit of an industrial feel to it, especially with Gerwig poised atop rusty metal overlooking the Manhattan bridge. The photos feel as if she is coming into herself, for she looks liberated and in her element. Viki Rutsch elevates the visuals of this shoot with his talented eye for set design.
