Samuel Ellis Scheinman cast the Summer/Spring 2023 Menswear show for Saint Laurent. The show took place in the Agafay desert just an hour out of Marrakech. The city holds significance to both the designer himself, Yves Saint Laurent, as he spent many years in the city while the brand’s museum, Musée Yves Saint Laurent, is located there.
Before the show, creative director, Anthony Vaccarello, spoke about the inspiration behind his best collection. He says, “for the first time, my most personal [work]. It’s maybe less, let’s say costume-y, than it could have been in the past” as he draws inspiration from his personal outfits twenty years ago and intertwines classic YSL accents.
The collection consists of trench coats and blazers that shaped the shoulders. The luxurious materials of leather, wool, and velvet elevated these classic designs. Anthony Vaccarello kept in mind the brand’s desire to blur the lines of gender as he created this collection and took some designs from the women’s winter line to make a statement about fashion. The point being great clothes can simply be great clothes.
