Before tying the knot on her tenure at Chanel, the former creative director Virginie Viard released one last collection for the fashion house’s fall 2024 show. To take a closer look at the collection, Vogue took readers on a journey to a French coastal town filled with Chanel heritage; the beautiful city of Deauville was where a young Coco Chanel had opened her first boutique in 1913 before conquering the world. It looked to be the perfect choice of location: the breezy summer clothes swayed in the seaside wind as the enchanting sunshine illuminated the unique fabrics used in the collection.
To prepare the models for the shoot, it was only natural for Chanel to bring in Odile Gilbert as the hairstylist. Gilbert, represented by Exposure NY, is a world-renowned hair stylist who has worked with almost all the big fashion houses. To this day, she remains the only female hair stylist to receive the French high honor Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres. Gilbert has an established relationship with Chanel, having been the hair stylist for the fashion house many times in the past decades.
For this shoot, Gilbert transported the models back to 1913 through her reminiscent hair styling. With a chin-length bob and curves mimicking the thrashing waves, the models wearing Chanel’s oversized straw hats looked like they were window shopping in the original Chanel boutique. Seeing their reflection in the shop window, they see their coolly classic summer clothes that they are certain will last the time. Coming out of the boutique to check in on potential customers, Gabrielle Bonheur “Coco” Chanel gasps and asks where they got their magnificent fit. With a broad smile on their face, the models say “It’s yours…just wait and see.”
