Summertime always adds a little extra spark to the already-nuclear city of New York (especially in this year’s heat). It brings out the seasonal tourists roaming the streets with bewildered eyes and dwindling wallets. Parades and festivals seem to become a weekly thing, and on a nice weekend, every park is filled with picnic blankets and beer cans. Walking through the city on a sunny day, one would see families heading towards an NYU college tour, summer interns out for their lunch break, and Exposure NY’s Eric Ogden with his camera around his neck.
Ogden has been active these past few months capturing the essence of summer in New York City. From the passionate couples in the Pride parades to the tipsy rollerbladers in the Xanadu roller disco, Ogden was there with his camera to seize the moment. Recently, Ogden has felt a new tool being added to his photography arsenal: “In the past few years I’ve combined my love of lighting with a more pared down, exploratory style of photography. Rather than only setting up shoots, I love going out looking for shocks and surprises. I use my camera in a way now that has changed me and those I come into contact with—it’s a lens but also a conversation, a way to grab attention or just observe, or even start a friendship.”
Treating the camera as a medium for connection and using it as an exploratory compass has given Ogden a new sense of photography, and the bustling New York summer proves to be the best incubator. From Katz’s Delicatessen to Chinatown, from Fifth Avenue to Elizabeth Street, Eric Ogden walks the streets of Manhattan to not just capture the spirit of New York, but to experience, with both hands out wide, the soul of Summer In the City.
Eric Ogden is a part of Exposure NY’s photography division. Exposure NY is a photography/styling agency in New York City.
