Arianne Philips is known for transforming simple costumes into a story, her work on Olivia Wilde’s The Invite is another masterpiece in character-driven fashion. The set is almost entirely in a San Francisco apartment over the course of one night, the set required simple visual details to reveal emotions about each character that wasn’t audible. Each person is essentially wearing one look throughout the film but every fabric, silhouette, and accessory became part of the narrative.
Phillips did not want to create a flashy wardrobe because she focused on the psychology of the film. Olivia Wilde’s character, Angela, is dressed as if to be one with her newly renovated apartment, to reinforce how her identity has now become intertwined with maintaining the perfect home. However, Joe is seen to be relaxed and have layers to reflect a man with little ambition; Penelope Cruz is dressed to bring warmth and sensuality through rich textures and meaningful jewelry. Her partner, Hawk, is shown to have confidence but mixed with understated sophistication, which completes the dynamic between the two couples.
Phillips proved that simplicity can be more impactful than creating a spectacle. Every choice in the garments reflects the characters desires and insecurities without shifting the power dynamics. She drew inspiration from the 1970s so the wardrobe felt timeless while still connecting to each character’s emotional journey.
In The Invite, costume design was not just about what the characters wore but more importantly it became another voice to tell a silent conversation. Arianne Philips has once again proven why she remains one of the most influential costume designers in the industry.
