Stefan Beckman designed the set of Francesco Vezzoli and David Hallberg’s performance for the opening night of Performa 15 on Sunday, November 1 at Saint Bartholomew’s Church in New York. Performa is a leading performing arts organization that commissions a three week-long biennial of performances across artistic disciplines that take place around the city. For the event’s Opening Night Gala, Italian artist Vezzoli and American classical ballet dancer Hallberg collaborated on Fortuna Desperata, a 48-minute ballet performance founded upon the rituals of 15th century Italian court dance. Together, they worked with Italian stage director and choreographer Deda Cristina Colonna to conceptualize a performance that celebrated a style of dance that had not historically been a public spectacle in a process that Vezzoli describes as an “archaeology of movement, the one area from the Renaissance that has left no physical trace."
